Endoscopy
Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy, also known as oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD), is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. A flexible endoscope with a camera is inserted through the mouth, providing real-time visualisation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is commonly performed to investigate symptoms such as dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), abdominal pain, reflux, or gastrointestinal bleeding. Gastroscopy allows for biopsies, therapeutic interventions (e.g., polyp removal, stent placement, variceal banding etc.), and the diagnosis of conditions like ulcers, gastritis, Barrett’s oesophagus, and malignancies. It is typically performed under sedation, with minimal recovery time, making it a vital tool for both diagnosis and treatment in surgery & gastroenterology.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the colon and rectum. A flexible endoscope with a camera is inserted through the anus, allowing real-time visualisation of the large intestine. It is commonly performed to screen for colorectal cancer, investigate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhoea, or abdominal pain, and diagnose conditions like polyps, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, or tumours. Colonoscopy also enables therapeutic interventions, such as polyp removal, biopsy, and bleeding control. Typically performed under sedation, it is a safe and essential tool for both the prevention and management of colorectal diseases.
